Russell Mulcahy (Road Games, Highlander) directs this horror film. Gregory Harrison, Arkie Whiteley, and Bill Kerr star.

My Bloody Valentine’s sophomore effort is often considered a seminal dream pop album. Its cover is a mess of warm hues that at first glance invites a sense of haze, but upon closer examination reveals a guitar. It’s an image that encapsulates the sound of the album: a squall that’s both dense and clear.

Unlike most slasher films, this one doesn’t try to overcome its cheesy mindless core and instead embraces it. Its 3D gimmick is a big part of the film, but it’s also a movie that knows its audience and delivers what they came out to see: gratuitous violence in king size portions.

Although the film does feature a few 2D scenes, it was designed and created to be seen in 3D. Watching it in 2D will only distract from the film’s main storyline and really isn’t worth the effort. Besides, who wants to waste their money seeing this movie in a 2D theater?

After Loveless, My Bloody Valentine found themselves in the position of being a band that had made one of the biggest albums of the 1990s but didn’t really owe anyone anything. Following weedy first efforts on Lazy and a short-lived run with a guy called Dave, MBV reinvented themselves for Creation as merchants of dreamy pop tunes clothed in juddering noise volcanoes, and soon enough they were name-checked by hip indie hopefuls roughing up their sound all over Southern England.

It’s a strange thing for a quartet whose languorous work-rate makes three-toed sloths seem hyperactive to consistently draw outpourings of hysterical praise from fans young and old. But there’s something about the way that the Valentines deliver their music that inspires fanciful flights of purple journalistic prose like no other group in recent years. Their immaculate sound-symphonies of overheating psychedelic noise present a blank canvas that’s open to any kind of imaginative interpretation: drugs, sex, dreams and extreme violence all make the cut.
